Torture, Child Abuses Charges Filed Against Man, Mother In Van Buren County

An 11-year-old boy and a two-year-old sibling are now in the custody of Child Protective Services after the older boy was found walking along County Road 380 in Columbia Township early Tuesday morning. His discovery has led to child abuse and torture charges against 28-year-old Randall Hamilton, who is the boyfriend of the boy's mother, and Hamilton's 46-year-old mother, Peggy Hamilton. They are being held in the Van Buren County Jail on a one-million dollar bond each after being arraigned Wednesday in South Haven. Police found evidence the suspects would use metal cuffs and nails to secure him to the floor in order to prevent him from moving for hours at a time. They add it does not appear that toddler was abused. The 11-year-old told deputies after he was found that he would never return to the two trailers where his family lived in Geneva Township.

Family members of the suspects, however, blame the boy's mother and are calling the 11-year-old a liar. Peggy Hamilton's husband, Randy, told WOOD-TV in Grand Rapids that the boy has been caught stealing from neighbors and frequently lies. Her son, also named Randy, denies any abuse ever took place. Van Buren County Sheriff's deputies say the injuries the 11-year-old had are consistent with the abuse he described. The entire clan moved to Van Buren County from Florida earlier this summer.
