The reality of a new emergency manager coming to town has the Benton Harbor City Commission sharing new ideas and setting new goals. During Monday night's "planning session," a round table discussion covered a possible city charter amendment, also listed the priority items to be addressed or implemented by the new emergency financial manager. A discussion on tweaking the charter to change the way the finance director conducts business was topic number one. Benton Harbor Mayor James Hightower says the finance director currently reports to the commission, he says a change is needed.
Currently the budget is handled by the E-F-M. Other ideas by commissioners revolved around generating revenue, from becoming part of a regional water authority, restructuring contracts, or implementing a city tax as Commissioner Trenton Bowens suggests.
All the ideas were compiled and will be reviewed before being submitted to the new emergency manager Tony Saunders. It was made public Friday afternoon that effective February 1st, Saunders would take over for Joseph Harris as emergency financial manager in Benton Harbor.
