Part of I-94 in Van Buren County will be known as the Trooper Rick L. Johnson Memorial Freeway starting on Wednesday. Michigan State Police will hold a dedication ceremony on May 6 to honor Johnson, who was killed in the line of duty conducting a traffic stop on May 6, 2000. He was hit by a vehicle as he was walking back to his Chevy Tahoe cruiser and briefly pinned between the car that hit him and his patrol SUV. The day before his death, Trooper Johnson convinced a suicidal man not to jump off an overpass near the site of the accident that claimed his life. Governor Snyder signed legislation authored by state Representative Aric Nesbitt in February to designate part of the highway in Johnson’s honor.
