The long-simmering debate over a proposed CVS Pharmacy in the city of St. Joseph is expected to come to a boil this afternoon. The city Planning Commission is holding a public hearing starting at 4:30 pm at City Hall on the plans. Developers want to build the pharmacy where Florin Funeral Home now stands at Niles and Napier, as Florin is selling the property and moving to Lincoln Township later this summer. They have said if the city does not approve the plans for CVS, they will sell the land to developers who would build a gas station on the site, as that requires no rezoning and no public hearings. Several neighbors who live along Myrtle Avenue and other nearby streets have objected to the CVS plans, saying it doesn't fit in their neighborhood. Developer Eric Harvey has told WSJM News this year that people who live near a five-lane state highway should expect to have commercial development along that stretch.
