St. Joseph City Commission Puts Off Kayak, Canoe Launches Again

An idea that was turned aside nearly a year ago and proposed by former St. Joseph City Manager Frank Walsh has been killed for at least another year. The city commission has decided against seeking a state grant to build new canoe and kayak launches at several locations along the St. Joseph River. Mayor Pro Tem Fran Chickering noted last night that she can think of better uses for the $100,000 it would have cost the city. Commissioner Mary Goff said that while the idea of adding launches that are compliant with the Americans With Disabilities Act is a good one, she agreed with Chickering and the rest of the commission that it's not the right time. During a public hearing last March, the reaction from residents was overwhelmingly against the plan, and it was tabled until last night.
