Our closest airport is changing its name to South Bend International. Airport officials say they believe the facility could have between 30,000 and 40,000 international travelers who are starting and ending their trip from South Bend within a few years. The change has been in the works for a year and a half, and talks are ongoing with air carriers to provide service to Mexico and the Bahamas. According to the airport, they believe the economic impact on northern Indiana and Southwest Michigan could be over $100 million a year. Two new facilities will be built, and construction is expected to start later this year on the general aviation facility and a new federal inspection station. The airport is working with U.S. Customs and Border Protection on that expansion. This change also opens the door for private international flights into Atlantic Aviation, the corporate/charter terminal at the airport.
