Single Vehicle Wreck Kills a Portage Man

A Portage man is dead today after he crashed his car into a tree in Waverly Township. Van Buren County Sheriff Deputies reported to the 35-thousand block of M-43 Highway where 81-year old John O'Leary was unresponsive and trapped within his vehicle. A passerby stood by the car with a fire extinguisher because the car was leaking gas. The "Jaws of Life" were used to extricate O'Leary from the car, he was transported to Bronson Hospital in Kalamazoo where he succumbed to his injuries. An autopsy will be performed to determine whether a medical issue was a factor in causing the crash and fatality.
