Silver Beach Pizza Asked To Revise Expansion Plans Again

The owners of Silver Beach Pizza are being asked to revise their expansion plans for a second time by the St. Joseph City Commission, with no guarantee at least three commissioners will support it. Commissioners Jeff Richards and Mary Goff continue to appear to be firm "no" votes, and raised new objections to the plan Monday night regarding if the addition would block the views of Whirlpool Centennial Park after the restaurant revamped their original proposal to restore views of the fountain from the bluff.

Silver Beach Pizza owner Tony Bertig says a small view will have to be obstructed, but noted the expansion is glass and can be looked through.

He added they want to build a second level to provide something unique - a view from a restaurant of Lake Michigan that doesn't exist anywhere else in Southwest Michigan.

Commissioner Chris Heugel has just one concern regarding how Silver Beach Pizza has things at the bottom of the ramp coming down the bluff, which Bertig says is being addressed.

Richards, however, remains unswayed as he believes it will obstruct the view of Whirlpool Centennial Park from the ramp coming down the bluff.

Bertig appeared frustrated by Richards and Goff changing their objection from the blocking of the view of the fountain to blocking the view of the grass, which was never mentioned in February when the proposal first came up. Mayor Mike Garey and Commissioner Chris Heugel are in favor of the expansion with slight tweaks, while Mayor Pro Tem Fran Chickering says if the deck could be lowered by about four feet, she might also be a "yes" vote.
