Senator Stabenow Hosts Grow It Here, Make It Here Hearing And Showcase

Senator Debbie Stabenow's "Grow It Here, Make It Here Initiative" was front and center Tuesday on Capitol Hill. A committee hearing was held focusing on manufacturing which utilizes bio-based products.

Ash Galbreath is with Lear Corporation out of Southfield. Over the last few years Lear was able to replace at least 5% of its seat cushion product with bio-degradable material.

Stabenow says this initiative was inspired by Henry Ford who in the 1940's was seeking ways to use agricultural products to replace patrolium.

Pete Pellerito is Senior Policy Consultant with the Biotechnology Industry Organization. He says the ability to use cells, micro organisms, and other natural material to generate industrial products is important to commerce.

The "Grow It Here, Make It Here Initiative" gives a tax cut to Michigan companies that invest in new facilities or purchase equipment to manufacture bio-based products.
