Leaders in Saint Joseph won't have to worry about negotiating with city employees for the next several years, as a tentative contract agreement with the firefighters union was approved on Monday. The firefighters had been without a contract since last July, and they were the last municipal union to come to an agreement with the city. Assistant City Manager John Hodgson says the contract is similar to what other personnel have agreed to, featuring wage increases of three percent each year over the five years that it covers, and a requirement that the employees contribute to their health coverage. It also increases what the firefighters must contribute to their pensions, going beyond the life of the rest of the contract:
The firefighters had been working without a contract since last July, and Hodgson says that the new agreement puts the city and its firefighters in a good position for years to come:
City Manager Frank Walsh said that everyone involved in the negotiations cooperated to find a deal that would keep the city in good financial shape, while protecting the job security of its eleven firefighters.
