SWM Planning Commission Calls For Countywide Transportation Authority



Berrien County's public transportation systems need patchwork, that's according to Kim Gallagher with the Southwest Michigan Planning Commission. She presented a study Thursday to the County Board of Commissioners.

The four services currently provided; Berrien Bus, Twin Cities Area Transportation Authority, Buchanan Dial-a-Ride, and Niles Dial-a-Ride, all have jurisdictional rules to follow, and all charge different fares. Joan Johnson is with Disability Network of Southwest Michigan.

Many commissioners voiced support for a transportation overhaul. Especially for the need to help riders heading to and from Lakeland Hospital. Gallagher calls a countywide authority the foundation for transportation coordination. Results of the study can be found at MyWayThere.org.
