Resolution Requesting Consent Agreement Heads To Lansing

Benton Harbor Area Schools is making it official, a consent agreement is being sought to help navigate the district out of deep deficit. The school board Monday voted to send a resolution to Governor Snyder to enter into an agreement with the state of Michigan. Last week Governor Snyder confirmed a determination the school system was in a financial emergency. Beginning Tuesday, Superintendent Dr. Leonard Seawood says 30-days will be given to forge the agreement.

He says Pontiac Public Schools, which went through the same process, took hours, over a number of days to hammer out an agreement. District officials hope to meet Tuesdays and Thursdays with the state to craft Benton Harbor's agreement.

Seawood says the district has done its due diligence in preparing for negotiations. Which he hopes will work to the district's advantage. The school system faces a $15-million deficit.
