Legislation is now before the Michigan House to rename Interstate 94 in Van Buren County for Michigan State Police Trooper Rick Johnson. State Representative Aric Nesbitt is pushing the measure. Johnson was killed in the line of duty in 2000 during a traffic stop. As he walked back to his patrol car, a third vehicle crashed into it, pinning him between his patrol car and the car he pulled over. Johnson was pronounced dead at Bronson Hospital in Kalamazoo. I-94 is named for Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety officer Eric Zapata in Kalamazoo County, as he was also killed in the line of duty within the past decade.
