Prosecutor: Bill Chickering To Change Campaign Materials After Complaint

Berrien County Prosecutor Mike Sepic is not planning to pursue charges against Berrien County Board of Commissioners candidate Bill Chickering. His opponent, David Yardley, alleges Chickering is breaking the law in his campaign signs and letterhead, which omit the word "for" and give the impression that he's an incumbent. Yardley says that is a misdemeanor, while Sepic in an email says he's not inclined to charge people with criminal election law violations when the issues can be corrected. Chickering tells Sepic that he will make changes to his signs by the end of the day Thursday, and put out a mailing to supporters with an altered letterhead indicating he's not an incumbent. Yardley and Chickering are running for the seat currently held by County Commissioner Cathy Thieneman, who is not seeking another term.
