Proos_ State Legislature In New Position With Projected Surplus



There's set to be a $177 million surplus for state government in Michigan for the next fiscal year, which starts on October 1. It's been quite a few years since lawmakers have started a session knowing they don't have red ink in their future, and state Senator John Proos says that provides new challenges for them when it comes to the next state budget.

The surplus was announced late last week following the revenue estimating conference in Lansing with state budget officials. Proos cautioned the report is just a projection, and things could drastically change between now and the end of September. The St. Joseph Republican said there is always the chance that national and global uncertainty could impact both the state economy and state government's budget.
