Proos Seeking To Get More Michiganders On Organ Donation Registry

Senator John Proos has introduced legislation called "Lauren's Law" in Lansing in an effort to increase the number of registered organ donors in Michgian.


The bill is named for Lauren Shields, who was placed on life support in New York at the age of 9 while waiting for a heart transplant. She received the heart and became the public face of organ donation in the Empire State, helping to get the same law passed there. Proos introduced it in Michigan due to the prompting of a Berrien County man.


The bill requires a Michigan resident to choose if they would like to be added to the donor registry when they are renewing their driver's license or applying for a new one. More information about the organ donor program is available online at
