31 years ago, Congress approved the Nuclear Waste Policy Act to establish a permanent site for spent nuclear fuel. Since then, billions of tax dollars have been collected to build it, but nothing has been done. State Senator John Proos blasted the federal government for years of inaction, with the Senate passing a resolution urging the Nuclear Regulatory Commission and the Department of Energy to finally act.
Cook Nuclear Power Plant in Bridgman recently expanded their pool for the spent fuel, and several lawsuits have been filed by nuclear plant owners over the years trying to get something done. Proos' resolution is now before the Michigan House.
