Possible Recall Against Hightower Moves Forward



Benton Harbor City Commissioner Dennis Knowles could soon begin collecting petition signatures to force a recall election on Mayor James Hightower, now that the Berrien County Election Commission has approved some of the language that he submitted. Clerk Louise Stine tells WSJM that the three member commission on Monday determined that Knowles had turned in two workable sets of recall language for the mayor. One says that Hightower should be removed from office for private meetings he held with state officials and former Whirlpool executives, and the other says he should be removed for cutting off elected officials from city business while working with the emergency manager. Knowles now has to pick which language he wants to use, and Stine says he can begin collecting signatures soon after:

393 valid voter signatures would be needed to force a recall. Stine also told us that the Election Commission rejected recall language submitted against Dennis Knowles and City Commissioner Trenton Bowens, as it wasn't clear enough to meet the standard.
