Pokagons Want To Change Squaw Creek To Nokmes Creek



The Pokagon Band of Potawatomi Indians wants a name change for a Berrien County waterway. Squaw Creek in New Buffalo flows into the Galien River, and the tribe wants it renamed due to racial stereotypes associated now with the Algonquian word for "woman." Berrien County Administrator Bill Wolf informed the county commission about the request.

The Pokagons want to change it to Nokmes Creek, which means grandmother. You can hear in the soundbite some indignation from one member of the public who attended this week's county board meeting. County Commissioner Mamie Yarbrough favors the idea.

The board will consider a resolution in the coming weeks if the Pokagon Band agrees to take care of any of the costs associated with the name change.
