Plainwell Man Treated For Hypothermia After Falling Into Lake Michigan

A Plainwell man is recovering at South Haven Health Systems after spending nearly an hour in 39-degree water in Lake Michigan today. South Haven Area Emergency Services were called when the man was spotted by people working near the shore. The man had fallen into the lake while putting out fishing lines from his boat, and was unable to get back in. He was far enough off the shore for local fire and EMS to call in the Coast Guard from St. Joseph along with the Van Buren County Marine Division. Before they arrived, a man who heard the distress call on the marine radio channel pulled up to him in his fishing boat and got the 56-year-old out of the frigid water. He's being treated for hypothermia.
