Benton Township activist Ed Pinkney is free on bond as he awaits trial on election forgery charges. Sheriff Paul Bailey tells WSJM News Pinkney is banned from using the Internet in any fashion as a condition of his bond and is on tether at home. He faces five misdemeanor charges and one felony related to the petition drive that forced the recall election of Benton Harbor Mayor James Hightower. The Berrien County Clerk's Office is requesting an immediate stay to call off that May 6 election. Clerk Sharon Tyler is requesting it not be rescheduled until after the charges against Pinkney and James Cornelius of Benton Harbor have been settled and until her office can thoroughly investigate the petitions. The two men allegedly allowed people to sign petitions more than once, which is a misdemeanor. Pinkney also faces a felony charge for allegedly changing the date on at least one petition.
