Parental Responsibility Act Passes State House

The state House is passing legislation that suspends welfare benefits to parents of children who are repeatedly truant. House Bill 4388 was sponsored by Representative Al Pscholka, he says it stresses the importance of education in the reduction of poverty. An avid mentor in Benton Harbor, Pscholka doesn't believe in people picking and choosing which kids will and will not be successful. The Stevensville Republican says any kind of support helps.

The bill would put into state law a policy adopted by the Department of Human Services in October. DHS has already removed a handful of families from the program due to child truancy. The bill was approved in the House by a 78-32 vote. It now moves to the Senate for consideration.
