A state House panel has approved a bill which would rename a portion highway after a fallen state trooper. The bill sponsored by Representative Aric Nesbitt of Lawton would honor Michigan State Police Trooper Rick Johnson, who was killed in the line of duty in 2000. He was 35 at the time of his death. Johnson had stopped a vehicle on westbound I-94 for a mechanical violation. While returning to his patrol car a third vehicle left the highway and crashed, pinning Johnson between the cars. If the bill is passed, a stretch of I-94 in Van Buren County would be renamed "Trooper Rick L. Johnson Memorial Freeway." The measure now heads to the full House.
