Nesbitt: Bill Package Protects Privacy Of Firearms Owners

Legislation that protects the privacy of firearms owners received testimony today from legislators in the Michigan House Judiciary Committee. The six-bill package exempts firearms records from Freedom of Information Act requests, protecting gun owners from disclosure of their records. State Representative Aric Nesbitt says making such information available to criminals could result in safety issues. Being joined by other sponsors of the bills, Nesbitt says the Legislature is being proactive by preventing public access to gun records to protect the public at large, not just gun owners. The legislation continues to provide law enforcement officials full access to firearms records in the course of their official duties. Reforms in the legislation would require that a log be kept of who accessed the files and the reason for doing so.
