Nearly $18-million is on the way to Benton Harbor Area Schools from the state. District officials were informed this week that the Michigan Department of Education is awarding the funds through the School Improvement Grant or SIG. About 150 schools in the state were eligible for the grants which will be used to bring in state-approved experts into three district buildings. Montessori Academy at Henry C. Morton and International Academy at Hull both get about $1.9-million each year over three years, while Benton Harbor High School was awarded nearly $2-million over the same time frame. The "Herald-Palladium" reports the grant program is heavily monitored, and the state will make weekly visits to see that the funds are being used properly. The grants are conditional on the state getting the money from the federal government.
