Could the Palisades nuclear power plant be closed for good in four years? A report from Reuters suggests it, citing aging infrastructure at the Covert Township facility. Nuclear Regulatory Commission spokeswoman Viktoria Mitlyng tells WSJM News whether or not the plant shuts down due to regulations on what's called "pressurized thermal shock," is up to parent company Entergy.

The NRC will then spend three years going over that data, with a decision due by 2017. "Pressurized thermal shock" is a phenomenon that happens when water is pumped into the reactor quickly and in large volumes to cool it in the vent of a problem. Mitlyng says the current regulations took effect in 1984, but Palisades and older plants have been allowed to operate under the previous rules. The NRC will hold an online meeting, or webinar, next Tuesday night from 5 to 6 to discuss "pressurized thermal shock" and how it could relate to Palisades.
