The second Be Healthy Berrien Million Mile Challenge will be shorter than last year, when county residents were encouraged and challenged to move a collective one-million miles. As a community, the county fell over 300,000 miles shy of the goal. The Berrien County Health Department says the Million Mile Challenge will run from June 1 to August 31 this year after going from May through the end of September in 2013. The program is paid for by grants from Governor Snyder's 4x4 wellness plan and is run by the health department, Lakeland HealthCare, the United Way, the YMCA of Benton Harbor-St. Joseph and Niles-Buchanan and the Southwest Michigan Planning Commission. People who take part are encouraged to log their daily activity on the BeHealthyBerrien.org website to have it tracked. There were plans underway over the winter to link that website to fitness tracker devices and smartphone apps to make it effortless to track, but there's no word if that will be ready by June 1.
