A bagger at the Niles Martin's is headed to Las Vegas next month to compete in the National Grocers Association's Best Bagger championship at the Mirage Hotel. Media marketing manager Cindy Kaplan says the Michigan winner is 28-year-old Maryann Pears, who has made the trip before.
She won the Michigan Martin's stores Bag Off in November and then won the state championship in December. She was previously competing in the national championship three years ago. Martin's is also sending Matt Brownbridge to represent its Indiana stores. He works in Granger and has been with the grocery chain for five years. Pears has been working for Martin's since she was 18. Kaplan says there is an art to getting someone's groceries bagged up just right, and the contestants are judged not only on speed, but also how heavy they pack the bags.
The overall national winner gets $10,000 and an appearance on "Late Night with David Letterman" on CBS. Martin's has had one national champion out of its Granger, Indiana store three years ago.
