Did you feel it? Chances are excellent that you did. The U.S. Geological Survey confirms a magnitude 4.2 earthquake hit southwest Michigan Saturday afternoon at 12:23 five miles south of Galesburg in Kalamazoo County. The shaking was felt all the way to St. Joseph and Benton Harbor along with Lansing, Grand Rapids, Ann Arbor and Troy. In a statement, Governor Snyder’s office notes there are no injuries reported from the quake, and there has not been any damage reported as yet. Michigan State Police are monitoring the situation along with the state Emergency Management and Homeland Security Division.

According to the Associated Press, people reported feeling the earthquake in Indiana, Illinois, Ohio and Wisconsin. Governor Snyder notes that the lack of major problems from the quake is “fortunate because we are acutely aware of the challenges posed by such natural disasters in other parts of the world recently.” Earthquakes are rare in Michigan, but do occasionally happen.
