MEDC Approves South Haven Phoenix Street Grant

The city of South Haven is in line to receive $750,000 from the state in the form of a Downtown Infrastructure Community Development Block Grant to rebuild Phoenix Street from Broadway Avenue to Kalamazoo Street. The Michigan Economic Development Corporation has told the city it has tentatively approved the funding, and City Manager Brian Dissette says construction is scheduled to start in October.

The city's Downtown Development Authority is committed to spending over $1.6 million in matching funds. The total cost of the project is just under $2.4 million. One big reason for the project is to replace a 75-year-old water main. Other improvements will include expanded sidewalks for outdoor seating near restaurants and shops, public art displays and more. The city will also soon launch a public wireless Internet network in that downtown corridor.
