Governor Snyder's proposed 2014 fiscal year budget is now before lawmakers for them to debate and take action on. Senator John Proos of St. Joseph says there is a lot for him to like, including the governor's initiative to hold another State Police trooper school.
Snyder is calling for a 2% increase in education funding from kindergarten through college. Proos and Representative Al Pscholka have both hailed the governor's desire to spend money on dredging. The senator says the plan "recognizes the urgent need for action to maintain our vital ports, known as ports of refuge." Proos adds recreational harbors cannot be ignored, though, either. Cass County Republican state Representative Matt Lori is calling Governor Snyder's proposal to spend $5 million on mental health innovations great news, especially where law enforcement is concerned.
Freshman state Representative Dave Pagel of Oronoko Township says lawmakers will give Governor Snyder's budget proposal "all the due diligence it deserves." Pagel says the governor has opened the door to discussion on several issues, specifically education.
The todal budget is nearly $51-billion, with 75% going to education and health and human services.
