Lawton Man Falls Victim To Scammers

The Van Buren County Sheriff's Department is reminding people to not fall for scams where they get a call from another country, claiming a relative is in trouble and needs money. It happened Tuesday to 85-year-old Carroll Rimes of Lawton, who is out $4,000 after wiring it to Peru after he got a call that his grandson was hurt and jailed after a car crash and needed the money to get out of jail. Turns out, his grandson was safe and sound at home in New York City and Rimes won't ever see that four-grand again. Van Buren County Sheriff Dale Gribler says another popular scam is for people to be contacted by scammers saying they've won a lottery or sweepstakes, and all you need to do to get the money is send a small fee or give out your banking information.
