Kinexus: Tourism Jobs Hot In Southwest Michigan

Hospitality and tourism jobs are hot right now in Michigan's Great Southwest. According to Kinexus officials, that segment of the economy in Berrien County alone accounted for over 6,000 jobs in 2013, which was a 13% jump from 2011. Kinexus Business Resource Analyst Matt Kodis expects the trend to continue.

Kodis adds 1,600 jobs have been created in just the past few years.

Kinexus Executive Director Todd Gustafson notes tourism has a nearly $700 million dollar impact on Berrien County’s economy with an additional $49 million spent by business travelers. The county is the fourth most-visited destination for tourists in the state, with 3.5 million visits per year. Retail hiring is also on the upswing in Van Buren County thanks to a new Meijer store in South Haven and a new Walmart under construction in Paw Paw.
