Two people have been arrested this week in southwest Michigan, one in Niles and one in Dowagiac, while going door-to-door claiming to represent Toronto-based Just Energy. Company spokesman Al Shulman tells WSJM News the men were indeed independent contractors, but both have since been fired. Shulman called it an unfortunate coincidence that two people have been arrested within the past week while working for them. Raymond Guzman was arrested in Niles after getting into a physical confrontation with a homeowner after demanding personal information and claiming to be from an energy company. In Dowagiac, an as-yet unidentified man was arrested on charges of marijuana possession and soliciting without a permit. The Berrien County Sheriff's Department has received other complaints about door-to-door solicitations for the same firm in Three Oaks and Berrien Springs. Shulman notes Just Energy has done business in Michigan for years and will be working to overcome the bad reputation the arrests have quickly given the company in southwest Michigan.
