Jim Walters, Democratic Candidate For The 26th District Senate Seat

A political rookie is seeking to thwart Republican Tonya Schuitmaker of winning the 26th District Senate Seat, which includes all of Van Buren and Allegan Counties and parts of Kent County. Jim Walters of Lawton announced his candidacy as the Democratic nominee. He says he was convinced to run after reviewing Schuitmaker's voting record.

Walters supports raising the state minimum wage, and spending more on public education.

The former aerospace engineer also wants big money to keep out of the Department of Natural Resources business.

The bill attempts to remove biodiversity as a management option for the DNR. Walters is President of the Board of Directors for two local non-profits, Open Doors Kalamazoo and Center for Transformation. He's also a graduate of the University of Michigan. 70-year old Walters is married with two sons.
