Benton Harbor Mayor James Hightower's campaign says there will not be a debate between the mayor and City Commissioner Marcus Muhammad as part of the May 6 mayoral recall election. Hightower has been recalled because he voted against putting a city income tax on the ballot last year. The mayor's campaign had requested a press moderated debate with WSJM, ABC 57 and the "Herald-Palladium," while Muhammad's camp wanted to use a town hall format. In an email to WSJM News, Hightower's campaign manager Troy Rolling says that unless Muhammad's campaign is willing to compromise, they will not debate. Voters will decide if Hightower stays on as mayor or if Muhammad will serve the remainder of the term in that office in just under three weeks.
