Fred Upton, Betsy DeVos Want Agema's Resignation As GOP National Committeeman

The condemnation of Michigan Republican National Committeeman Dave Agema continues by prominent members of the GOP. Grand Rapids-area Republican powerbroker Betsy DeVos called on Agema to resign over the weekend over recent anti-gay and anti-Muslim comments. Now Congressman Fred Upton is speaking out, and referencing the teachings of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. on tolerance and civil rights.

In December, Agema made upset people with remarks to the Berrien County Republican Party critical of gays and lesbians, saying they wanted to get free healthcare for their partners because they were dying of AIDS. This month, the former state Representative from Grandville posted anti-Muslim comments on Facebook, wrapping them up by insinuating that Muslims provide nothing positive to American society. Governor Snyder spoke out against Agema's remarks in his State of the State speech last week, but would not reference the committeeman by name. When questioned Monday, the governor contended Agema is just one of several people who he feels are out of line.

When asked how the party should go about getting rid of Agema, however, Upton is stumped.

State Representatives Al Pscholka and Dave Pagel, state Senator John Proos and Upton all condemned Agema's comments in Bridgman in December. Pscholka spoke to WSJM News about the speech last month, while Pagel, Proos and Upton issued written statements.
