A former librarian with the Van Buren District Library is suing over how she was treated at the end of her career. 67-year-old Shirley Whitt is going after the library in federal court in Grand Rapids, claiming she was asked to transfer because of her age and other reasons from the Gobles branch after working there for more than 20 years. Library officials, meanwhile, say there was no discrimination and they received a steady stream of complaints about how Whitt treated patrons, particularly kids. She was accused of pulling a sucker from a child's mouth, treating kids harshly and even taking a stuffed animal from a child. The library is asking a federal judge in Grand Rapids to dismiss the discrimination lawsuit. Whitt retired in 2011 instead of accepting a transfer.
