Federal Minimum Wage Hike Legislation Stifled

Senate Republicans have blocked legislation that would raise the federal minimum wage to $10.10 an hour. Democratic Senator Debbie Stabenow, who cosponsored the bill, says a majority of support was obtained but that wasn't enough.

She says it's well past the time for a minimum wage increase.

A recent study by the Center for American Progress found that a $10.10 minimum wage would reduce spending on food assistance in Michigan by more than $205 million annually and would reduce the SNAP rolls by more than 110,000 people. The federal minimum wage has not been raised in five years. Currently anyone working full time earning that wage only earns around $15,000 a year, which is about $4,000 below the poverty level for a family of three.
