A lot of the impacts aren't yet known, but federal employees are warning services like Social Security will have huge backlogs and people who need help the most will suffer due to the federal sequestration budget cuts. Jamie Guinn says they're being told that Social Security workers will have to take 22 to 26 furlough days between now and the end of September.
Guinn is a Social Security employee from Grand Rapids who led a rally outside the Social Security Administration office in Benton Harbor Wednesday afternoon to let people know the cuts will be painful for everyone. The American Federal Governmental Employees union organized roughly 100 such rallies nationwide. Guinn said those who took part did so on their own time, either on a lunch break or by taking personal time off. While some in Congress have said the federal government should be able to withstand a 10% spending cut, those we spoke with say nothing was studied to find what makes the most sense to cut.
