There is a lot of uncertaintly for farmers today, as the Farm Bill expired at midnight and nothing has been passed by Congress to replace it. That means all federal farm programs have reverted back to the 1949 Farm Bill, and USDA Secretary Tom Vilsack says it's not a good thing.
The U.S. Senate passed its version of the Farm Bill with broad bi-partisan support earlier this year. Michigan Senator Debbie Stabenow headed up those efforts as the chairwoman of the Senate Agriculture Committee, and told WSJM News this summer she was proud of the work they did, and was angered by the inaction in the House.
Congressman Bill Huizenga from Zeeland says he doubts the expiration of the Farm Bill will be as bad as the White House and other Democrats are predicting. The bill passed the House Agriculture Committee, but was never brought up for a vote on the House floor.
