Family Of Tyler Carr Wins Libel Lawsuit

$81,000. That's the settlement for the family of Tyler Carr in a libel lawsuit against a former Coloma resident for her letter to the editor in the May 31 "Tri-City Record" concerning the 21-year-old's death last March. Virginia Hauf wrote the family had not spent money from a fundraiser for Carr's funeral and expenses, which the family disputed. Carr's stepmother, Karla, said the letter added insult to their injuries from his death. Carr was run over in a field after a party in Pipestone Township. No charges were filed after the Berrien County Sheriff's Department spent several months investigating the circumstances and conducting hundreds of interviews with witnesses. The Carr family is considering suing the "Tri-City Record" now for publishing the letter in the first place.
