It was a bit unusual to see a Democratic and Republican primary debate taking place at the same time, but that's what happened Thursday in Berrien Springs. The two Democrats seeking to replace State Representative Sharon Tyler in the 78th District joined the three Republicans on the ballot for a forum sponsored by the League of Women Voters. Gerry Welling said that the key to reviving Michigan's economy will be education, among other things:
Welling focused heavily on keeping a strong public education system throughout, saying that it's his top priority. The other Democrat -- Jack Arbanas -- agreed that schools have been short changed by Governor Rick Snyder as he, in Arbanas' opinion, rewarded his campaign supporters and friends with tax breaks in recent years:
Both support expanding Medicaid in order to comply with the Affordable Care Act, and also support Michigan's medical marijuana law, with Welling questioning why marijuana is illegal at all.
A separate story with the comments from the GOP candidates is also available on wsjm.com.
