Under intense scrutiny over how the animals are being treated and with charges looming over one of its operators, Deer Forest is closing in Coloma in October, and likely will not reopen. The operators of the park made the announcement Tuesday morning on Facebook, saying they've been backed into a corner that they cannot emerge from due to bad press, previous ownership and "a small group of non-believers." An arrest warrant was issued this week in Illinois for Deer Forest operator Jon Stolarz for failing to appear in court in that state in an animal cruelty case, and two USDA investigations are ongoing into the facility. Stolarz and his wife say they are selling the animals but plan to stay open during the week through Labor Day and on weekends until Halloween. They add in their statement that it would take "a miracle" to reopen after this year.
