The Berrien County Sheriff's Department and the county animal control office are investigating the shooting death of a pit bull by a Buchanan police officer. The officer killed the animal after it allegedly killed a cat and a small dog. Police were called to the 300 block of Fulton Street Saturday morning by a woman who said two pit bulls got into her yard and killed her cat, which was on a leash. When an officer arrived, he noticed the dogs going after another dog on a leash, and yelled at the animals. One started running toward him, prompting the officer to pull out his gun and shoot twice when the animal was within five feet of him. The other dog ran off and hid underneath a car. Investigators will be interviewing the owners of the animals involved.
