Congressman Fred Upton is in line to receive an award this week from the National Organization for Rare Disorders, or NORD. He will be presented with it by Sarah Kennedy and her daughters Brooke and Brielle of Mattawan. Upton has referenced the little girls several times in testimony about his sponsorship of the National Pediatric Research Network Act, as they suffer from a rare disease known as Type II Spinal Muscular Atrophy. The new law spearheaded by Upton is aimed at enhancing pediatric medical research and encouraging researchers to work more closely together. The NORD staff invited the Kennedy family to the event in Washington, DC on Thursday after reading a story about Upton saying the girls had inspired him to pass the reforms. The award will be given at NORD's Portraits of Courage Celebration at the National Building Museum.
