Commissioner Marcus Muhammad Supports Ballot Proposal to Impose Millage

A Benton Harbor City Commissioner is supporting a ballot proposal that will impose a millage, which in turn will eliminate the special assessment currently on citizens. Marcus Muhammad issued the statement Sunday, he says the millage will include a personal property tax on businesses within the city, and the tax roll for residents will not increase. However, Muhammad says Benton Harbor will capture revenue from the personal property taxes collected from the business sector. If the citizens of Benton Harbor vote to impose the 10-mil millage the 10-mil special assessment will be eliminated immediately, and the special assessment will not be placed on summer taxes. Muhammad says he supports the initiative because it is fiscally prudent and it is a necessary step toward financial recovery.
