A Coloma murder suspect was arraigned this week in Berrien County court. The prosecutor’s office says that 47 year old Monty Menefee was arrested in Lake County, Ohio on April 29th for the April 24th death of his mother, 79 year old Lavonne Monta. The Coloma Township Police Department was called to Monta’s home in the 500 block of Washington Street on the afternoon of the 24th to do a welfare check. Officers found her body, and subsequent evidence led them to her Menefee, who is her son. He fled the state before police could arrested him, but they tracked him to Ohio. On Thursday, Menefee was arraigned on a charge of open murder, and bond was set at one million dollars. He remains in the Berrien County Jail, and a preliminary exam has been set for May 15th.
