Coloma Man Killed After Turning Bicycle In Front Of Pickup

A 54-year-old Coloma man is dead after a weekend accident between a vehicle and his bicycle in Hagar Township. State Police were called to the scene around 9:30 p.m. on Saturday to find Merle Dowling laying on Riverside Road at Broderick in critical condition. According to police, Dowling turned his bike in front of a pickup driven by a 25-year-old Benton Harbor man as they both were going west on Riverside Road. The victim had been drinking and was not wearing a helmet. The accident remains under investigation and troopers have not indicated if the driver of the pickup will face any charges. Dowling died several hours later at Lakeland Hospital in St. Joseph.
