The Van Buren County Sheriff's Department is investigating an alleged cockfighting operation after 18 dead roosters were found in Lawrence Township on Sunday night. Officers also confiscated a stolen quad runner, a stolen mini-bike, other possible stolen items and more than $5,000 in cash. 32-year-old Bobby Johnson of Lawrence has been arrested and several felony charges are pending. Lieutenant Robert Kirk of the sheriff's department says they don't think it's a widespread problem.
When officers arrived at the home, they noticed blood and feathers in the dirt inside a pole barn, with Johnson showing police he was raising roosters and hens. He also admitted one of the roosters had fought that night. A pre-trial date has been set for next Tuesday, March 12.
